Are the Vehicle Finance Rates Advertised Online Real?

Advertised online vehicle finance rates are usually real but represent a best case for ideal borrowers; your actual rate depends on your profile, the asset and the deal.

Advertised online vehicle finance rates are usually genuine, but they typically show a best-case figure aimed at ideal borrowers with strong credit, a solid deposit and a newer asset. Your actual rate depends on your own profile and deal, so it may be higher. At Overdrive, broker Simon Kendrick compares more than 80 lenders against your real circumstances, so instead of a headline figure you may not qualify for, you see rates you can genuinely expect.

Advertised rates are real but conditional

The rates you see advertised online are generally legitimate, not invented, but they usually represent the sharpest pricing a lender offers, reserved for the strongest borrowers and cleanest deals. Think of an advertised rate as a from figure: it is the best case, available to someone with excellent credit, a healthy deposit, a newer mainstream vehicle and an established business. If your profile differs, and most people's do in at least one respect, your rate is likely to sit higher. That does not make the advertised rate false; it simply means it is a starting point rather than a promise. The honest question is not whether the rate is real, but whether you personally qualify for it.

Why your rate may differ

Several things move your actual rate away from the advertised one. Your credit history, how long you have traded, the size of your deposit, the age and type of vehicle, the loan size and your industry all feed into pricing. A short trading history, a smaller deposit or an older asset typically lifts the rate above the headline figure. Lenders also cap advertised rates to specific loan amounts, terms or asset types, so a deal outside those parameters is priced separately. This is why a rate that looks great online can turn into a different number once your circumstances are assessed.

Read the fine print

Advertised rates usually come with conditions in the fine print: minimum loan sizes, particular terms, asset age limits and eligibility criteria. There may also be fees that the headline rate does not reflect, which affect the true cost. A very low advertised rate paired with high fees can cost more than a slightly higher rate with fewer charges. Treat an eye-catching figure with healthy scepticism and look for the conditions attached. If they are hard to find or the rate seems too good for your situation, it probably applies to a profile stronger than yours.

Getting a rate that applies to you

The most reliable way to know your rate is to have your actual profile assessed against multiple lenders. Rates start from around 7.20% p.a. for strong, asset-backed deals, with lower-doc, older or cheaper assets and weaker credit priced higher, indicative and subject to assessment. Rather than pinning hopes on a headline number, comparing lenders against your real circumstances shows what you can genuinely expect, and often finds a better outcome than any single advertised rate you happened to see.

If an advertised rate caught your eye, it is worth finding out whether you qualify for it. Simon can compare your real profile across more than 80 lenders and show you achievable rates. Request a free quote and see the number that actually applies to you.
