To read a vehicle finance quote properly, look past the repayment figure and check the interest rate, all fees, the term, any balloon or residual and the total amount repaid over the loan. Together these reveal the real cost and how the loan is structured. At Overdrive, broker Simon Kendrick walks you through each line and compares more than 80 lenders, so you understand exactly what a quote means and how it stacks up before you sign anything.
The key numbers on a quote
A vehicle finance quote packs several figures into a small space, and each tells you something. The amount financed is what you are borrowing. The interest rate drives the cost of that borrowing. The term sets how long you repay. The repayment is what you pay each period, and the total repaid, if shown, is the sum of every repayment plus any balloon. Fees, such as establishment and ongoing charges, sit alongside these and add to the real cost. Reading the quote well means taking in all of these together rather than jumping straight to the monthly repayment, because a comfortable-looking repayment can hide a long term, a large balloon or heavy fees that lift the total you ultimately pay.
Watch the balloon or residual
Many business vehicle quotes include a balloon or residual, a lump sum owing at the end of the term. It lowers your monthly repayment, which can flatter the quote, but it does not disappear: at the end you must pay it, refinance it or cover it by selling the vehicle. When reading a quote, note whether a balloon is present and how big it is, then factor it into your view of total cost and your plans for the vehicle. A low repayment paired with a large balloon is a very different deal from a slightly higher repayment with no balloon at all.
Fees and conditions
Beyond the rate, check the fee lines and any conditions. Establishment fees, ongoing account fees and any brokerage fee all add to what you pay, and two quotes with similar rates can differ once fees are counted. Look also at conditions such as early-repayment terms, which affect your flexibility if you want to pay the loan out sooner. If a quote does not spell these out clearly, ask before proceeding. A transparent quote lets you compare on genuine total cost; a vague one invites surprises later in the loan.
Remember a quote is indicative
A quote reflects assumptions and current pricing, and it is not a formal approval. Once a lender assesses your full application, the rate and repayment can be refined, and quotes usually carry a short validity window because pricing moves. Rates start from around 7.20% p.a. for strong, asset-backed deals, with weaker profiles priced higher, indicative and subject to assessment. Use a quote to plan and compare, but confirm the final figures in your loan documents before you commit, and make sure they match what you were quoted.
If a quote leaves you unsure what you are really paying, that is exactly what a broker clears up. Simon can read a quote line by line and compare it across more than 80 lenders. Request a free quote and understand every number before you sign.
