No-Doc vs Low-Doc Vehicle Finance Explained

Low-doc finance uses light evidence like your ABN and asset backing; no-doc goes further with minimal paperwork. Both suit businesses without full financials, differing mainly in what is required.

Low-doc and no-doc vehicle finance both let you borrow without full financial statements, but they differ in degree. Low-doc relies on light evidence such as your ABN, GST registration and often being asset-backed. No-doc goes further, asking for minimal paperwork, and typically leans heavily on strong asset backing and clean credit. Overdrive compares more than 80 lenders across both approaches, so you get the lightest paperwork your profile supports without paying more than you need to.

The core difference

Both options exist for businesses that cannot or would rather not supply full financial statements and tax returns, but they sit at different points on the paperwork scale. Low-doc typically asks for an active ABN, GST registration in many cases, identification, and often relies on your being asset-backed and having clean credit. No-doc reduces the documentation further, sometimes to little more than identification, ABN details and the asset itself, which means the lender leans very heavily on strong security and a clean credit profile to offset the lack of information. In practice, no-doc is usually reserved for well-asset-backed applicants, while low-doc is a bit more flexible on who qualifies. Both are assessed on risk from a lighter set of information, subject to lender criteria.

When low-doc suits you

Low-doc is the more common and generally more flexible of the two. It works well if your financials are simply out of date, you have recently restructured, or you want to skip the delay of compiling accounts, while still being able to provide basics like GST registration or bank statements. Because it uses a slightly fuller picture than no-doc, it can sometimes access sharper pricing and higher amounts. For many businesses without current financials, low-doc strikes the best balance between light paperwork and competitive terms.

When no-doc makes sense

No-doc suits applicants who are strongly asset-backed, such as property owners with clean credit, who want the absolute minimum of paperwork. Because the lender has the least information, no-doc often relies on that strong security and may come with a lower borrowing cap or a higher rate to reflect the reduced visibility. It is not necessarily harder to obtain if your asset position is solid; it is simply a different trade-off between paperwork and pricing, subject to lender assessment.

What it costs and how to choose

As a rule, the less information a lender has, the more the pricing may reflect that, so no-doc can sit above low-doc, which in turn can sit above full-doc, though strong asset backing narrows every gap. Rates start from around 7.20% p.a. for strong, asset-backed deals; lower-doc, older or cheaper assets and weaker credit are priced higher, indicative and subject to lender assessment. The right choice depends on what you can easily provide and your asset position, which a broker can quickly assess.
