Buying machinery privately can save you money compared to a dealer, but many operators assume finance is only for dealership purchases. It is not. Lenders regularly fund private sales, provided the machine and the seller check out. At Overdrive Machinery Finance, Simon Kendrick compares a panel of 80+ banks and non-bank lenders on one application, so you can finance a private-sale purchase smoothly, with the right checks in place to protect you and satisfy the lender.
Can you finance a private machinery sale?
Yes. While dealership purchases are the most common, lenders on our panel regularly fund machinery bought directly from another business or private seller. The process has a few extra checks compared to a dealer deal, mainly because there is no dealer standing behind the transaction, but it is entirely routine. The lender assesses the machine and the seller, confirms the price is reasonable, verifies clean title, and on settlement typically pays the seller directly. For buyers, private sales can mean a lower price and access to machines not available through dealers. So if you have found the right excavator, tractor or loader through a private seller, finance is very much on the table.
Why do private sales need extra checks?
In a dealership purchase, the dealer manages much of the paperwork and stands behind the sale. In a private sale, those protections are absent, so the lender does more verification to be confident the deal is sound. They will want to confirm the seller genuinely owns the machine, that it is free of existing finance, and that the price reflects fair market value. This protects both the lender, whose security is the machine, and you as the buyer. The extra steps are not obstacles so much as sensible due diligence. Handled properly, they ensure you are buying a clean machine at a fair price and not inheriting someone else's finance or a dispute over ownership.
How important is a PPSR check?
It is essential. The Personal Property Securities Register records finance interests over equipment, and a search tells you whether the machine you are buying has money owing against it from the seller's own finance. If it does and you buy without clearing that interest, a previous financier could potentially repossess the machine even though you paid for it. Your lender will require the machine to be free of prior security interests before funding, and the settlement process is structured to clear any existing loan as part of the transaction. Never complete a private machinery purchase without a PPSR check; it is a small, crucial step that protects you from a genuinely costly mistake.
How does the lender value the machine?
Because there is no dealer invoice setting a retail price, the lender assesses the machine's market value independently, considering its make, model, age, hours and condition, and comparing the agreed price against typical values for similar equipment. If the price you have negotiated is in line with or below market, funding is generally straightforward. If it looks high, the lender may fund only up to their assessed value, leaving you to cover any gap. This is one reason doing your own research on fair prices before agreeing a figure with the seller pays off. A sensible, market-aligned price makes the finance simpler and protects you from overpaying on a private deal.
How does settlement work on a private sale?
Once your finance is approved and the checks are complete, settlement follows a clear sequence. The lender confirms the machine details, verifies clean title via PPSR, and prepares the documentation. On settlement, the finance funds are typically paid directly to the seller, or used to clear any existing finance on the machine with the balance to the seller, ensuring the unit transfers to you free of encumbrances. You then begin your repayments to the lender. Because the money flows through the lender rather than hand to hand, both parties are protected. Simon coordinates these steps so the settlement is orderly and you are not left managing the mechanics of a private transaction alone.
What documents will you and the seller need?
You will typically need your ABN, identification and details of the machine, plus bank statements or a soft credit check depending on the amount and lender. For established businesses, low-doc private-sale finance up to around $500,000 may need little more, subject to lender criteria. From the seller's side, evidence of ownership and their details for the payment are usually required, along with an invoice or sale agreement setting out the machine and price. If the seller is a business, a tax invoice with GST is standard. Having these ready keeps the process moving. Simon will tell you exactly what a given lender needs so both you and the seller can prepare in advance.
What are the pros and cons of buying privately?
The main advantage of a private sale is price: without dealer margins, you can often secure a machine more cheaply, and you may find well-kept equipment that a particular owner is upgrading from. The trade-offs are less protection and more due diligence: no dealer warranty, sale usually as-is, and the onus on you to verify condition and title. Inspecting the machine carefully, or having a qualified person do so, is wise. Running the PPSR check and getting an independent sense of value are essential. Weighed up, private sales can be excellent value for a careful buyer, and with finance and the right checks in place, the process is far less daunting than it first appears.
