How Old Can a Rigid Truck Be to Finance?

There is no fixed rigid truck age limit; lenders assess age at end of term, condition, and type, and Overdrive compares 80+ to fund older trucks.

There is no single age at which a rigid truck becomes unfinanceable, but age does shape which lenders will help and on what terms. Many assess the truck's age at the end of the loan rather than today, so an older rigid can still be funded over a shorter term. Overdrive Truck Finance and Simon Kendrick compare 80+ banks and non-bank lenders, including those comfortable with older trucks, so age alone rarely stops a sensible deal.

Key highlights

  • Most lenders judge age at the end of the term, not the day you buy
  • Newer rigids attract longer terms and sharper indicative rates
  • Older trucks are often financeable over shorter terms with specialist lenders
  • Condition, kilometres, and service history can outweigh age alone
  • Some non-bank lenders fund rigids well over 15 years old

Is there a hard age limit on rigid truck finance?

Not a universal one. Each lender sets its own policy, and while some mainstream banks prefer trucks under a certain age, plenty of non-bank lenders will finance older rigids that others turn away. What most of them share is a focus on the truck's age at the end of the term rather than at purchase. A lender might be comfortable with a truck reaching 15 years old by the time the loan finishes, which means a 12-year-old rigid could still get a three-year term. Because policies differ so much, an older truck that one lender declines may be perfectly financeable through another. Overdrive knows where those lenders sit.

Why lenders care about truck age

Age is a proxy for two risks: resale value and reliability. An older rigid is worth less if the lender ever has to recover it, and it is statistically more likely to face expensive repairs or downtime that could affect your ability to repay. That is why newer trucks attract longer terms and better pricing, while older ones come with shorter terms and slightly more conservative structures. None of this means an older truck is a bad buy; a well-maintained rigid with a documented service history can be a shrewd purchase. It simply means the lender needs to see that the asset will hold up over the loan. Presenting condition well is key.

How age affects your term and rate

As a rule, the newer the rigid, the longer the term and the sharper the indicative rate on offer, with pricing from around 6.55% p.a. for eligible applicants and subject to assessment. A near-new truck might be financed over five to seven years, while a ten-year-old rigid may be capped at three or four. Shorter terms mean higher monthly repayments, so it is worth factoring that into your cash-flow planning before committing to an older, cheaper truck. Sometimes a slightly newer purchase actually costs less per month once term length is accounted for. Simon can model a few scenarios side by side so you can see how age, term, and repayment interact for your budget.

When condition matters more than age

Age on paper does not tell the whole story. A 12-year-old rigid with full service records, moderate kilometres, and evidence of careful ownership can present better to a lender than a poorly kept truck half its age. Documented maintenance, a recent roadworthy, and a reputable seller all help. Kilometres are a big factor too, since a truck that has done long-haul work will wear differently to a metro rigid on lighter duties. If you are buying older, gather the history and condition evidence up front. Overdrive can put that in front of lenders who weigh condition heavily, giving an older but well-kept truck the fair hearing it deserves.

Financing very old or high-kilometre rigids

For trucks well beyond the usual thresholds, say 15 years or more, or with very high kilometres, finance is still possible but narrows to specialist non-bank lenders. Expect a shorter term, a possible deposit or additional security, and pricing that reflects the higher risk. It can still be the right move if the truck is cheap, does the job, and the numbers work for your business. What you want to avoid is applying to bank after bank and collecting declines that mark your credit file. Simon goes straight to lenders known to consider older assets, so you get a realistic answer without the wear and tear of repeated knockbacks.

Balancing age against total cost

Buying older to save on purchase price can make sense, but weigh it against the full cost of ownership. A shorter finance term lifts the monthly repayment, an older truck may need more maintenance, and resale at the end will be lower. Sometimes a mid-age rigid hits the sweet spot: cheaper than new, but young enough for a longer term and better rate. There is no universally right answer, only the one that fits your work and cash flow. Overdrive helps you look past the sticker price to the real monthly and lifetime cost, so the age you choose is a deliberate decision rather than an accident of what was on the lot.

If the rigid you want is older than you would like, do not assume finance is off the table. Overdrive Truck Finance will assess the specific truck and your profile, run a soft credit check with no mark on your file, and compare 80+ lenders to find those comfortable with its age. For eligible applicants, indicative decisions can come back within 24 to 48 hours.
