New ABN prime mover finance is possible with the right lender. Learn how start-ups get approved and what to prepare across 80+ lenders.

Low doc (no financials) up to $500k Funding from $20k–$10M+ 80+ lenders compared No long forms or paperwork

Starting out as an owner-driver often means buying your first prime mover before your ABN has much history behind it, and that can feel like a barrier. It does not have to be. Lenders do finance new businesses; the trick is knowing which ones and how to present your case. At Overdrive Truck Finance, broker Simon Kendrick compares 80+ banks and non-bank lenders on one application, matching new ABN holders to lenders that genuinely support start-up transport operators rather than turning them away.

Key highlights

  • New ABN prime mover finance is available through specialist start-up lenders
  • Industry experience and a signed contract strengthen a new-ABN application
  • A deposit, trade-in or property security can offset limited trading history
  • Low-doc options may suit start-ups without full financial statements
  • One application reaches the lenders that actually back new businesses

Can you finance a prime mover with a brand-new ABN?

Yes, though not every lender will play. Some mainstream banks prefer to see one or two years of trading before financing heavy trucks, but plenty of specialist and non-bank lenders on our panel actively support new ABNs, including businesses only weeks old. What they look for is evidence that you can make the truck earn: prior experience driving or running similar work, a contract or letter of intent, and a clean personal credit file. A new ABN is not a dead end; it simply narrows the field to lenders comfortable with start-ups, which is exactly the group a broker can steer you toward from the outset.

Why industry experience matters so much

For a new business, the single most persuasive factor is often your background. If you have spent years driving prime movers for an employer and are now going out on your own, lenders read that as low operational risk even though the ABN is fresh. You know the work, the costs and the routes. Documenting this helps: how long you drove, in what roles, and for whom. The same applies if you are expanding sideways from a related transport business. Experience reassures the lender that the truck will be used productively and maintained properly, which can outweigh the short trading history and open doors that raw numbers alone would not.

Does a contract or work lined up help?

It can be decisive. A signed subcontractor agreement, a haulage contract, or even a firm letter from a prospective client showing guaranteed work gives the lender confidence that repayments will be covered from day one. For a start-up with no trading history, this evidence of future income partly replaces the past income the lender cannot see. It does not have to be locked in for years; even ongoing regular work with a reputable principal helps. If you have work waiting on the truck, make sure your application says so clearly and includes the paperwork, because it directly addresses the lender's main concern about a new ABN.

Using a deposit or security to strengthen your case

When trading history is thin, tangible backing can tip the balance. A cash deposit, a trade-in truck, or property offered as security all reduce the lender's exposure and signal your commitment. Property equity in particular can move a marginal start-up application into approval territory, subject to lender criteria. Even a modest deposit shows you have skin in the game. This is not to say no-deposit new-ABN finance is impossible; it is available for the right profile. But if your application is otherwise light, adding security is one of the most effective ways to unlock a yes and, often, better indicative terms than you would get unsupported.

Low-doc finance for start-ups without financials

A new business usually has no tax returns or full financial statements yet, which is where low-doc finance comes in. Instead of years of financials, low-doc lenders may rely on your ABN and GST registration, bank statements, an assets-and-liabilities position and a declaration of income, subject to their criteria. For eligible applicants this can support borrowing up to around $500,000 low-doc, though amounts and terms depend on the lender and your profile. It is a practical route for start-ups who are clearly viable but cannot yet produce the paperwork a full-doc application needs. A broker can tell you quickly whether low-doc is the right path for your situation.

What new ABN holders should prepare

Presentation matters more when your history is short. Before applying, get your ABN and GST registrations in order, keep your personal credit file clean, and gather anything that evidences income or experience: past employment, contracts, letters of intent and bank statements showing turnover. Have a clear idea of the truck, its price and its intended work. A tidy, complete application signals a serious operator and makes the lender's decision easier. Avoid scattering applications across banks that reject new ABNs, since each knock-back and enquiry weakens your file. Getting the presentation right the first time, aimed at the right lender, is the fastest route to approval.

How Overdrive helps new operators get started

Knowing which lenders welcome new ABNs is the whole game, and it is where Simon Kendrick adds the most value. Rather than letting you apply to a bank that will decline on principle, Simon directs your single application to the lenders on the 80+ panel that specialise in start-up transport finance. He helps you assemble the experience, contract and security evidence that these lenders respond to, and protects your credit file from wasted enquiries. For a new owner-driver, having someone who knows the start-up lenders and speaks their language can be the difference between getting on the road now and waiting a year for trading history.

If your ABN is new and you are ready to buy your first prime mover, do not assume the answer is no. Overdrive can give you an obligation-free quote using a soft credit check only, so checking your options leaves no mark on your file. Simon will show you which start-up lenders may consider your application, what evidence to prepare, and what indicative repayments could look like. For eligible applicants, decisions can be returned within 24 to 48 hours. Get in touch and let us help you finance the truck that launches your business.
