Yes, you can use a trade-in as your deposit on truck finance. The equity in your current truck is offset against the new purchase, reducing what you need to borrow, exactly like a cash deposit would. If finance is still owing, only the value above the payout figure counts. Overdrive's Simon Kendrick compares 80-plus lenders to structure the trade as your contribution, with figures indicative and subject to lender assessment.
How a trade-in becomes a deposit
Lenders care about how much of the purchase you are covering yourself, not whether that contribution arrives as cash or as a truck. When you trade in, the agreed value of your current truck is deducted from the price of the new one, which lowers the amount financed in the same way a cash deposit would. If your truck is owned outright, its full trade value becomes your deposit. That can improve your loan-to-value position and, in turn, the rate and term a lender is prepared to offer, without you having to find cash from the business.
When you still owe on the trade
If there is finance owing on the truck you are trading, the picture shifts slightly. The existing loan has to be paid out, and only the equity above that payout counts towards your deposit. So if the truck is worth more than you owe, the surplus is your contribution; if you owe more than it is worth, there is no deposit and the shortfall must be covered. Getting a current payout figure and a realistic trade value before you negotiate is the best way to know exactly what your trade brings to the deal.
Trade equity versus cash
Using trade equity as your deposit lets you preserve cash for fuel, wages and other running costs, which is often more valuable to an operator than sinking money into the truck. A cash deposit and trade equity are treated much the same by lenders when assessing your contribution. Rates start from around 7.20% p.a. for strong, asset-backed deals, with lower-doc, older or cheaper trucks and weaker credit priced higher; all figures are indicative and subject to lender assessment. You can also combine a trade-in with some cash if you want a larger deposit overall.
Getting the numbers right
Because a trade-in involves a value set with the seller and, sometimes, a payout to reconcile, it pays to have the figures clear before you commit. A private sale can return more than a trade and put more towards your deposit, but it takes time. Comparing lenders shows how much a larger contribution actually changes your repayment, so you can judge whether chasing extra equity is worth the effort.
