Financing a Truck With a Trade-In

A trade-in reduces the amount you finance on a truck, acting like a deposit; its value offsets the purchase price, and any existing loan is paid out at the same time.

Trading in your current truck reduces the amount you need to finance on the new one. The trade value is offset against the purchase price, working much like a deposit, and if you still owe money the old loan is paid out as part of the deal. Overdrive's Simon Kendrick compares 80-plus lenders to structure the trade and the new finance together, with all values indicative and subject to lender and dealer assessment.

How a trade-in reduces your loan

When you trade in, the agreed value of your old truck comes off the price of the new one, so you borrow less. If your truck is worth a solid figure and is owned outright, that whole amount effectively becomes your deposit, which can improve the loan-to-value position and, in turn, the terms a lender is willing to offer. Because you are financing a smaller balance, the repayments are lower for the same term. The trade value itself is set between you and the dealer and is indicative until confirmed, so it is worth checking it against recent private-sale prices.

When you still owe on the trade

If there is finance owing on the truck you are trading, the dealer or lender pays that loan out and only the equity above the payout counts towards the new purchase. Where the truck is worth more than you owe, that surplus becomes your deposit. Where you owe more than it is worth, the shortfall has to be covered, either in cash or, subject to lender assessment, rolled into the new loan. Getting a current payout figure before you negotiate stops any surprises when the numbers are reconciled at settlement.

Trade-in versus selling privately

A trade-in is convenient and handles the payout of any existing loan in one step, but a private sale often fetches more, which puts more towards your deposit. The trade-off is time and effort: advertising, inspections and buyers who may want their own finance. If speed and simplicity matter, trading in is hard to beat. If squeezing the most equity out matters more, selling privately and bringing cash to the deal can lower your loan further. Either way, comparing lenders first tells you how much the extra deposit actually changes your repayment.

Structuring the finance around it

However you handle the trade, the new loan is where the long-term cost sits. Rates start from around 7.20% p.a. for strong, asset-backed deals, while lower-doc, older or cheaper trucks and weaker credit are priced higher; all figures are indicative and subject to lender assessment. Terms typically run one to seven years with balloon or residual options to suit your cash flow and workload. Simon compares 80-plus lenders so the trade value, any payout on the old loan and the new repayment all fit together cleanly, and same-day pre-approval may be available for eligible applicants once your details have been reviewed.
