If you have never financed a work vehicle before, the process can seem opaque. In practice, business ute finance follows a fairly predictable path. Here is what usually happens from the first enquiry to driving the ute away.
How is a ute loan structured?
Most business utes are funded through a chattel mortgage, where your business owns the ute from day one and the lender takes security over it. The loan amount, term and any balloon or residual are set upfront, and repayments are fixed for the term in many cases. Other structures such as finance lease exist, and the best choice depends on your accounting setup, which your accountant can help confirm.
How do lenders assess ute finance?
The lender reviews your ABN, GST status, the vehicle details and your credit and repayment history. Eligible applicants may be asked for limited documents, while others provide fuller financials, depending on the lender and loan size. Because Overdrive compares more than 80 lenders, the application can be directed to one whose criteria are likely to suit, though every approval remains subject to assessment.
How do settlement and repayments work?
Once approved, the lender pays the dealer or seller and the ute becomes yours to use. Repayments then run over the agreed term, commonly between two and seven years subject to lender criteria and vehicle age. Any balloon amount falls due at the end and can often be refinanced, paid out or handled by selling the ute.
