Key highlights

  • Finance pre-owned cars, utes and vans from dealers or private sellers
  • Lower purchase price can mean smaller borrowings and faster payoff
  • Vehicle age and condition influence the rate and available term
  • Chattel mortgage, lease or hire purchase structures all apply
  • Private-sale purchases can be financed subject to lender checks

Used vehicle finance lets your business fund a pre-owned car, ute or van, whether from a dealer or a private seller, often for far less than buying new. Lenders assess the vehicle's age and value alongside your business, and structures mirror those for new vehicles. At Overdrive we compare more than 80 banks and non-bank lenders on one application, so buying used does not mean settling for a second-rate loan; you still get competitive terms across the market.

What used vehicle finance covers

Used vehicle finance funds the purchase of a pre-owned car, ute, van or SUV for business use. The finance itself works much like it does for a new vehicle: you can use a chattel mortgage, lease or hire purchase, secured against the vehicle you are buying. What differs is that the lender pays closer attention to the asset, since a used vehicle's age, kilometres and condition affect both its value as security and how long it will keep earning. Used finance covers purchases from franchised and independent dealers as well as private sellers, opening up a much wider pool of vehicles at prices that often make strong commercial sense.

Why businesses buy used

The obvious appeal is value. A quality used ute or van can cost substantially less than its new equivalent while doing exactly the same job, which means smaller borrowings, lower repayments and a faster path to owning it outright. New vehicles also take their steepest depreciation in the early years, so buying a well-maintained example a few years old lets someone else absorb that initial drop. For businesses that put vehicles to hard use, or that need several at once, buying used can stretch the budget across more of the fleet. The trade-off is doing your homework on condition and history, which protects both you and the lender.

How vehicle age affects the finance

Lenders care about a used vehicle's age because it drives the vehicle's value over the loan term and its reliability as security. Newer used vehicles, say a few years old with modest kilometres, are financed much like new ones, at competitive rates and full terms. As vehicles get older, some lenders shorten the maximum term, adjust the rate, or cap the age at which the vehicle can still be financed, often measured at the end of the term rather than the start. This is one area where lenders differ markedly: a vehicle one lender considers too old may be perfectly financeable with another, which is where comparing the market genuinely pays off.

Financing a private sale

Buying privately can secure a sharper price than a dealer, and many lenders will finance private-sale vehicles, though they apply extra checks. Expect the lender to verify the seller, confirm the vehicle is not already under finance by checking the Personal Property Securities Register, and often arrange a valuation or inspection to confirm condition and value. The funds are typically paid to the seller once these checks clear. It adds a few steps compared with a dealer purchase, but it is well-trodden ground and we manage the process for you. The key is choosing a lender comfortable with private sales, since not all treat them the same way.

Eligibility and documents

You will generally need an active Australian ABN to finance a used vehicle for the business. Lenders assess your trading history and credit alongside the vehicle's age, condition and value. Full-doc applications backed by financials and bank statements attract the sharpest pricing, while low-doc options using bank statements and BAS may suit where full accounts are not available, and newer businesses can still qualify subject to criteria. For a private sale you will also need the seller's details and the vehicle's records. A quote through Overdrive is a soft credit check only, so getting an indicative rate on a used vehicle will not affect your credit score, and there is no obligation to proceed.

Amounts, terms, rates and speed

Used vehicle finance is available from around $20,000 up to $10 million+, whether you are buying one vehicle or several. Terms typically run from 1 to 7 years, though older vehicles may attract shorter maximum terms. Rates start from around 6.55% p.a. for strong, asset-backed deals on newer used vehicles, with older vehicles, lower-doc profiles or weaker credit priced higher; all figures are indicative and subject to lender assessment. For eligible applicants buying from a dealer, same-day pre-approval and settlement within 24 to 48 hours may be possible; private sales can take a little longer while ownership and valuation checks are completed.

Why comparing 80+ lenders matters

Used vehicle policy is where lenders diverge most, especially on vehicle age, kilometres and private sales. One lender may decline a seven-year-old van outright while another finances it happily; maximum terms and rates for the same used vehicle can vary widely. Approaching a single bank risks a decline or an average rate simply because of a rigid age policy. Overdrive lodges one application across more than 80 banks and non-bank lenders, then presents the offers that suit the specific vehicle you are buying and your business profile. You deal with one broker, we handle the checks and comparison, and your credit file is protected from multiple hard enquiries.

If you have found the right used vehicle, or are still looking, we can prepare an obligation-free quote and tell you which lenders suit that vehicle's age and your business. A quote is a soft credit check only, so it will not affect your credit score, and there is no commitment to proceed. Send us your ABN and the vehicle details, including whether it is a dealer or private sale, and we will compare our lender panel for the sharpest fit. For eligible applicants, approvals can move quickly, so you can secure the vehicle before someone else does.
