A business car loan allows your business to purchase a passenger vehicle — whether a compact sedan, a prestige SUV or an electric vehicle — through your ABN rather than as a personal loan. This guide covers how business car loans work, what rates apply, how the tax and GST benefits work, and what to look for when comparing options.
How Business Car Loans Work
Run the numbers on your repayments
Use our finance calculator to estimate weekly or monthly repayments.
You apply through your business ABN, and the vehicle is registered in the business name (or the lender's name in a lease). The lender funds the purchase and you repay over an agreed term. Because the loan is taken in the business name, you can often access better rates and tax benefits than with a personal loan, provided the vehicle is used primarily for business purposes.
Business Car Loan Rates
Business car loan rates in Australia currently range from around 5.99% to 12% per annum. New vehicles for established businesses with clean credit attract the lowest rates. Used vehicles, new ABNs, luxury vehicles and applicants with credit issues carry higher rates. We compare 80+ lenders to identify the most competitive rate for your vehicle and business profile.
Car Finance Through an ABN
To access a business car loan, you need an active ABN and the vehicle must be used for business purposes. Low doc applications up to $300k are processed with just your ABN and driver's licence — no bank statements required. Full doc applications require BAS, tax returns and financials, but often unlock lower rates for well-established businesses.
Business-Use Requirements
Lenders and the ATO require the vehicle to be used for business purposes to access business finance and the associated tax benefits. Business use includes driving to client sites, carrying tools or equipment, or any travel that forms part of your business operations. Purely private-use vehicles are not eligible for business finance — your accountant can confirm the appropriate business-use percentage for your situation.
Chattel Mortgage Versus Business Car Loan
A chattel mortgage is a type of business car loan where your business owns the vehicle from day one. The lender registers a charge over the vehicle as security. Benefits include: claiming the full GST input tax credit upfront in the BAS quarter of purchase, and deducting depreciation and interest at tax time. This is the most common structure for ABN holders buying a car for business use.
A finance lease is the main alternative — the lender owns the vehicle, you make fully tax-deductible lease payments, and at the end of the term you can purchase it for the residual value or return it. Leases suit businesses that prefer lower monthly payments or want to upgrade vehicles regularly.
Low Doc Options
Low doc business car finance is available up to $300k for most lenders, using just your ABN and driver's licence — no bank statements required. Lite doc adds 6 months of bank statements for income verification. Some lenders will go to $500k on low doc for very strong profiles. No tax returns or full financial accounts are required on low doc — making this ideal for sole traders, tradies and small business owners.
New ABN Applicants
Business car finance is available from specialist lenders even if you've just registered your ABN. Approval is based on your personal credit history, the vehicle being financed and the loan amount. Rates are typically higher for new ABN applicants but finance is genuinely accessible.
No-Deposit Finance
Zero-deposit business car finance is available for eligible businesses with at least two years of GST registration and clean credit. A deposit can help you access a lower rate and reduce your monthly repayments — but it's not always required.
New Versus Used Cars
We finance new, demonstrator and used business vehicles. Used vehicles are assessed individually by the lender based on age, kilometres, condition and value. Vehicles over 10 years old may carry higher rates or require a deposit.
Dealer, Private and Auction Purchases
Finance is available for vehicles purchased from franchise and independent dealerships, private sellers and auction houses. For private sales, the lender settles funds directly to the seller after verifying ownership. For dealer purchases, the lender pays the dealer directly at settlement.
Loan Terms and Balloon Payments
Business car loan terms typically range from 12 to 84 months. A balloon payment defers a lump sum to the end of the term, reducing monthly repayments. We structure the balloon to align with the vehicle's expected resale value at end of term.
GST and Tax Considerations
Under a chattel mortgage: GST-registered businesses can claim the full GST input tax credit (1/11th of the purchase price) in the BAS quarter of purchase. The luxury car tax (LCT) threshold for 2025–26 is $76,950 for fuel-efficient vehicles and $69,152 for other vehicles — vehicles above these thresholds attract LCT that cannot be claimed as a credit. Depreciation limits also apply to passenger vehicles — speak to your accountant before purchasing.
Passenger Cars, Luxury Vehicles, EVs and Hybrids
We finance all passenger vehicle types through ABN: sedans, hatchbacks, SUVs, prestige vehicles, electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs). Popular models include the Tesla Model 3, Model Y, BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Audi Q5 and Lexus ES. EVs and PHEVs are increasingly popular for business use due to lower running costs and FBT benefits for eligible novated lease scenarios.
2026 Rate Environment
Business car loan rates are fixed rates set by lenders — they are not directly linked to the RBA cash rate (currently 4.35% as of August 2026). When the RBA adjusts the cash rate, variable-rate products such as home loans are affected immediately, but commercial vehicle finance is issued at a fixed rate agreed at settlement. This means your repayments are locked in for the life of the loan regardless of what the RBA does next.
